Roofing and Shingle Dumpster Rental in California

California roofs come off in two very different weights, and ordering a tile tear-off like a shingle tear-off is the classic mistake.

This page covers what is specific to California. For container sizing, accepted and prohibited materials and how the rental works, see Roofing & Shingle Dumpster Rental.

Tile is the California difference

Concrete and clay tile are everywhere on California houses, and a tile roof weighs several times what an asphalt shingle roof of the same area does. A tear-off that looks like a 20 yard by volume belongs in a 10 yard by weight, and the box will leave looking a third full. That is the correct outcome, not a wasted rental.

Asphalt shingle work follows the usual arithmetic: roughly one and a half to two tons per 1,000 square feet for a single layer, more for every layer underneath. Tell us the roof area, the material and how many layers are coming off and the size stops being a guess. If you do not know the layer count, assume two - California has plenty of houses with an overlay that was done before anyone cared.

Fire-rated re-roofs and what they add to the load

A re-roof in a designated fire hazard severity zone has to go back as a fire-rated assembly, which is why so many California tear-offs strip to the deck rather than overlay. Stripping to the deck means underlayment, batten, sometimes the deck itself and often a layer nobody expected, so the debris volume is larger than a simple shingle swap.

Wildfire country adds a second rule worth knowing: debris from a property that actually burned is not ordinary roofing waste and is handled through the agency-run cleanup programmes, not a rented container. Normal maintenance and upgrade work in the same neighbourhood is ours all day.

Placement, because the roofer is working above the box

A roofing container wants to sit where the tear-off can be dropped straight into it, which usually means the driveway directly under the eave rather than the kerb. Driveway placement needs nothing from the city; the street needs an encroachment permit, and in hill neighbourhoods the street is often too narrow or too steep to be an option at all.

California driveways are frequently stamped, coloured or decorative concrete, and a loaded roll-off on decorative concrete is a conversation nobody enjoys afterwards. We bring plywood and set the box on boards, and we will ask about the surface when you book rather than when the driver arrives.

California questions

What size dumpster for a tile roof tear-off?

Smaller than you think - usually a 10 yard, 20 only for a large roof. Concrete and clay tile reach the weight limit at well under a third of the visible capacity.

What size for an asphalt shingle roof?

A 20 yard covers most single-family single-layer tear-offs up to about 30 squares. Two layers or more, or a cut-up roof with multiple valleys, and we would plan a swap or step up.

Can the container go on my driveway?

Yes, and for roofing it is usually the right place. We set it on boards to protect the surface, which matters on the stamped and coloured concrete common here.

Do you take debris from a house damaged by wildfire?

Fire-damaged structural debris is handled through the agency-run cleanup programmes rather than a rented container, and there are good reasons for that. Ordinary re-roofing and repair work in the same area we handle normally.
