Green Easy Dumps roll-off container beside a hook-lift truck at a multi-storey building under construction

A roll-off is the open-top steel container that arrives on a truck with a hooklift or cable hoist and gets rolled off at your site. It is the default container for most construction and renovation work because it loads from the top, takes a walk-in door at the rear on most sizes, and leaves when the job does.

The decision that actually matters is not volume but weight. Every container carries an included tonnage allowance, and landfills charge by the ton past it. A 20 yard box filled with shingles will hit its limit at roughly the halfway mark, while the same box filled with cabinetry and carpet will not come close. Tell us the material and we will quote a size that does not leave you paying overage.

How to pick a roll-off size without overpaying

Contractors tend to order one size up out of caution, which is usually the right instinct for light bulky debris and the wrong one for anything dense. Two practical rules cover most jobs.

For heavy inert material, concrete, brick, soil, tile and asphalt, order a 10 or 15 yard and expect to fill it partway. The weight allowance will run out first and a bigger box only tempts you past it.

For light bulky material, framing lumber, insulation, cardboard, furniture and general cleanout waste, order by volume and go one size up. You will not get near the tonnage cap, and a second haul costs far more than the size difference.

What delivery day actually needs from you

The truck needs room. Roughly 60 feet of straight, level approach to set a 20 yard or larger container down, and about 23 feet of vertical clearance, because the bed tilts high before the box touches the ground. Low branches and utility drops are the two things that most often turn a delivery around.

Clear the spot before the window opens. A parked vehicle in the drop zone is the most common reason for a dry-run fee, and that fee buys you nothing. If the container is going in a residential driveway, ask the dispatcher to note boards under the rails: concrete marks easily under loaded steel.

What goes in, and what cannot

Prohibited items are set by the disposal facility, not by us. A load containing them is rejected at the scale and comes back to site.

Goes in the container

  • Mixed construction and demolition debris
  • Lumber, framing waste and plywood
  • Drywall, lath and plaster
  • Cabinetry, trim and millwork
  • Flooring, carpet and padding
  • Roofing material (ask about a dedicated size)
  • Furniture, fixtures and non-refrigerant appliances
  • Scrap metal and ductwork

Cannot be accepted

  • Wet paint, solvents, lacquer and thinners
  • Motor oil, fuel, antifreeze and other automotive fluids
  • Asbestos-containing material
  • Tires, batteries and propane tanks
  • Refrigerant appliances that have not been evacuated
  • Medical or biohazard waste

If you are unsure about something specific, call before it goes in the container. A single prohibited item can cause the whole load to be turned away at the gate, and that is a wasted haul charged to the job.

Recommended sizes for this work

Sizes we would normally quote for roll-off dumpster rental, with the weight allowance that matters.

Dimensions are typical; tonnage allowance is confirmed when you book, because disposal rates differ by county.

How the rental runs

Tell us the debris and the ZIP

One call sizes the container. What you are throwing away matters more than how much of it there is, because a concrete load hits its weight limit long before it fills the box.

We confirm placement and permits

Driveway, street or lot. We need roughly 60 feet of straight approach and 23 feet of overhead clearance for the truck to roll a container off. Street placement in most cities needs a right-of-way permit, and we will tell you what yours asks for.

Delivery, usually next day

Same-day delivery is often available on calls placed before about 10am. The driver sets boards under the rails on request so the container does not mark your concrete.

Load to the fill line, then call for the haul

Keep debris level with the top rail. An overloaded container is unsafe to tarp and the driver cannot legally haul it. Call when you are done and we pull it, or swap it for an empty if the job is still running.

Questions about roll-off dumpster rental

How long can I keep the container?

A standard rental runs 7 to 10 days. Longer holds are normal on active construction and are quoted by the day up front rather than billed as a surprise at pickup.

What happens if I go over the weight limit?

Overage is billed per ton at the disposal rate for your county, and you get the scale ticket. There is no markup invented on top of it. Asking for the tonnage allowance before you order is the way to avoid it entirely.

Can the container go on the street?

In most cities, yes, with a right-of-way or obstruction permit from the municipality. Requirements vary by city and some require reflective markings overnight. We will tell you what your city asks for before delivery.

Do I need to be on site for delivery?

No, as long as the placement is unambiguous. Mark the spot with a cone, a stake or a bucket and tell dispatch which way the doors should face.
